Dear Parents & Guardians,

1) Welcome back after the short Easter Break!

This week, there will be an order of operations assessment on Friday.

Next week, we will be going to our April Walking-Field Trip once more.

I will email all parents via school messenger with the details once the weather allows us to go.

2) For the Grade 6 graduation, we would love to include your child's baby photo into our slideshow.

If you wish, please email me one picture of your child during their early days. We will then contrast their past and present appearance during the graduation assembly. Please state the name of the child and the approximate age at that time.

In LA, students will be working on their story writing and news article elements this week.

I have marked all picture prompt stories that were handed in on Thursday and am in the process of marking the late handed-in texts asap.

Our first writing PAT is taking place on May 18th.

Students will have 4 hours to write

  • a news report from a given set of facts/ background information
  • a story based on a picture prompt.

Math updates:

This Friday, after almost two full weeks of teaching and practicing solving math expressions based on the oder of operations, we will quiz the students on their understanding. Below is a chart explaining the steps and an example.

Grade 6 curriculum does not specify the use of exponents in this unit. We know and use them however in area and volume questions. In the quiz they will be used to determine if students have the full mastery of the concept. It will be possible to achieve level 2 and 3 without using them.

An exponent simply means that a number is multiplied by itself as many times as the exponent shows.

Examples:

Hence the answers would be 125 and 36
